SRA once again led a study mission to New York, to attend the NRF's Big Show 2019 Convention and to tour some of New York's innovative retail outlets.

The study programme for 11 to 18 January 2019 was:
Day One: 12th January 2019 - The group commenced the trip with a visit to see the Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, a 250 outlet out of town retail centre with leading high end brands offering 25-60% discounts. Thereafter, the group attended the NRF Big Show International Reception at the Marquis Marriot, before visiting a Whole Foods outlet.
Day Two: 13th January 2019 - The NRF Big Show 2019 kicked off at 8.30am with the SRA delegates making their way to the convention centre in time for the first plenary session. All enjoyed a packed day with many presentations and exhibits to discover. Following BJ’s Wholesale Chairman and CEO Chris Baldwin’s conference kickoff, retail luminaries appeared on the stage to share their thoughts on leadership, culture, diversity and inclusion, giving back to the community and the importance of nurturing a workforce. The day ended at the NRF Foundation Gala which raised $3.2 million to support the next generation of retail talent.
Day Three: 14th January 2019 - The NRF Big Show 2019 got underway on Monday with informative presentations by the CEOs of Levis, Alibaba,Target and Lowes. On this second day of the world’s largest retail conference and expo, CEOs of Dick’s Sporting Goods, Levi’s and Lowe’s spoke on leading with conviction, while Janet Yellen outlined the economic factors impacting 2019. Target’s Brian Cornell outlined successes while Alibaba discussed its globalization strategy. Digital first brands shared how they went physical and speakers in the Girls’ Lounge explored how women are leading the industry through transformation. Many other interesting sessions were held in the Innovation Lab and Expo Hall. After a debrief, the SRA delegation visited Levi's at Times Square - the brand's biggest store, with denim customisation, onsite tailors and on demand t-shirt printing!
Day Four: 15th January 2019 - The final day of NRF's Big Show 2019 got underway with insightful sharings from Macy's, b8ta and Story. Across the 10 stages at the event, Tuesday featured Macy’s Chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette on the Main Stage, while startups UrbanStems and Boll and Branch talked frictionless retail on the Innovation stage. The event concluded with a closing keynote from Chip and Joanna Gaines of Magnolia. This final day of the convention saw the Singapore delegation attend as many sessions as possible, whilst surveying the exhibitors and various innovations, concluding with a de-briefing dinner hosted by Enterprise Singapore.
Day Five: 16th January 2019 - The retail study mission progressed on to hosted store tours from 16th to 17th January, with a multitude of innovative stores visited, including on 16th January - Nordstrom Men's, b8ta, Dyson and Dover Street Market. Another track of tours took in Crate & Barrel, Arhaus and a range of furniture stores also.
Day Six: 17th January 2019 - Nike House of Innovation, Apple, Facebook, and Samsung 837 were visited. Our thanks to all those we visited for their warm welcome and hospitality, and for taking the time to guide us and share with us their insights.
Day Seven: 18th January 2019 - our final day saw visits to The Oculus at World Trade Center, Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, and American Dream in New Jersey, where we were lucky enough to meet Triple 5 Group Chairman Mr Nadel Ghermezian. The group then departed from JFK that evening.
The group touched down in Singapore on 20th January, with positive reviews and feedback on the trip. This 2019 study mission group, and the 2018 NRF study mission group, will soon be invited to a combined re-union seminar where SRA will present some new innovations being offered as a result of learnings from the NRF Big Show.
